Historical Fiction or Historical Time Period Book

Posted on May 8, 2012 in Uncategorized by nadiaarmstrong

What exactly is Historical Fiction?

This kind of book is when the story takes place during a point in history.  It could be a really long time ago, or even more recent events. The book will explain about events that did truly happen.  In the made up story, it may also refer to people that really did live during a specific time period or historical moment.  The tricky thing about this genre is that there are books that have the setting in the past, but they don’t really go into any historical background. According to people who study literature, this kind of book is referred to as a “time period book.” Time period books aren’t truly historical fiction because the book’s focus never explains about true events in the story that actually happened.  Examples of “time period” books would be: Little House on the Prairie, Old Yeller, or Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Writer’s Celebration

Posted on March 28, 2012 in Uncategorized by nadiaarmstrong

Each spring we hold an annual celebration of the writers in fourth grade.   Fourth grade is a critical year for writing
and the kids have worked very hard to learn the skills they need for the 4thgrade state test.  On April 15th  we will be celebrating in two parts.  The first part will be small sharing groups where students can read their best piece of writing.  The second part will be a time where students will display all of their writing while other students and parents can wander
and enjoy reading and responding to their work.

The schedule for April 15th  will be 10:00-10:45 for Small group sharing with parent and community docents and 11:15-12:00 for enjoying student writing displays.    Parents are welcome to come to any or all of the festivities.

2.  Do your share of the work and share the benefits as well.

3. Stay with your partner.  Honor your committment.

4. Be respectful at all times.

5.  Only agree to a partnership if you are committed.

5.  Don’t agree to something that you can’t follow through with.

6. Be happy and enjoy the experience even if your partner is not a friend.

7.  Limit the partnership to 2 or 3 people.

8. Your first priority is to your partner.

NW Native American Environment

Posted on January 5, 2012 in Uncategorized by nadiaarmstrong

In the process of studying the Native people of the Northwest, students created a beautiful mural of the NW coastal environment in which the natives might have lived.  They put this together in a little over an hour by working together, researching and planning.  Thank you to Julieanne, Jodi, Julie and Theresa for helping out.  Thank you to all those that sent in craft items for the kids to use.    More pictures can be found under the photograph tab.  Ask your child for the password if you forgot it.
